 UNLOCK POTENTIAL

trainingConflict is natural, and can result in growth and positive change if we rise to the challenge creatively. Sadly, conflict may also lead to dysfunction, anger or even violence. Mediation skills empower individuals to identify and choose a more productive alternative.

Through mediation, relationships can be strengthened, rather than damaged, as problems are confronted. Mediation is a process in which a neutral facilitator assists parties in conflict to find a resolution that is agreeable to all. The process and skills applied by those neutral facilitators can be used directly by individuals facing conflicts to manage them for successful outcomes.

The Mediation Center offers a variety of training packages for individuals and for groups. All of our programs are skills based. Our approach is interactive so that participants experience and practice tools for reconciling conflicting interests by talking, rather than fighting.

Our trainings focus on communication skills, value awareness, self control, emotional maturity, and process. Each program is designed to address specific needs, including:

Our trainers are knowledgeable, energetic, responsive and involving. Our programs can be scheduled and tailored to meet your special needs. Costs are based on time and participants.

WHAT PROGRAMS DOES THE CENTER OFFER?

The Mediation Message

This promotional program introduces principles of mediation, and the Center's services. The presentation is appropriate for a wide range of audiences, including church or neighborhood groups, PTA's, etc. When time permits, an exercise is included so that participants take home something they can immediately apply to improve their own experience of conflict. The program runs about an hour, but can be adjusted to fit your schedule.

Conflict Resolution Skills

This package includes understanding conflict, recognizing conflict styles, communication skills, and techniques for altering your own responses to conflict to produce better results. Learn how to alter habits that are handicaps. The basic material can be presented in a half day format. Longer versions include additional material and more opportunities for practice, including role plays.

Mediation Skills

This program focuses on the 4-phase process used in mediation. This process allows parties in conflict to reach a greater understanding of each other's needs, communicate effectively, and -- from that perspective -- discover solutions that will satisfy all parties. Learn to handle problems effectively by having those involved take responsibility for devising and implementing their own resolutions. Through mediation, conflicts are transformed into opportunities to build trust and strengthen relationships.

Group Problem Solving Facilitations

This training is designed for groups where conflict threatens effective teamwork. The workshop is conducted in two half-day sessions, approximately one week apart. At the first meeting, participants learn communications and conflict resolution skills while exploring the issues that are creating conflict within the group. Between sessions participants are encouraged to provide more information to give trainers a full picture of the situation. At the second session participants reach a shared perspective of their problem and brainstorm for resolutions that will allow the group to define common goals and work effectively to reach them.

Stress & Anger Management

The Center offers skills-based programs for individuals whose lives are negatively affected by stress and/or anger. On-going workshops meet weekly. Executive coaching is also available. Skills promote self-understanding (necessary for self-control) and better relationships with others. Course activities include self-analysis, improving listening and self-expression, techniques for detecting and defusing negative feelings, strategies for avoiding harmful outbursts. The Center's programs expose participants to new ways of thinking and interacting positively with others that will increase peace and harmony in their lives.

Diversion Programs

The Center works with sponsors to deliver skills training to target populations who are at-risk or already involved with the justice system. The goal of these programs is to promote productive citizenship by instilling participants with skills that will assist them to behave responsibly.

Basic Mediator Training

This is a 28-hour classroom experience with 12 added hours of real mediation to receive a 40 hour certificate. This course meets the requirements of the Dispute Resolution Programs Act regulations for community mediators and is designed for professionals who want to develop mediation skills and others from the community interested in mediation or doing volunteer mediation. Those seeking to enhance personal skills are also welcome. All volunteer mediators must be certified.
