SKILLS FOR RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP

The philosophy of mediation includes the idea that peace can best be achieved when individuals take responsibility for outcomes.

The Mediation Center therefore works with the Probation Department to offer diversion programs that instill the values and skills of personal responsibility in at-risk youth. These programs serve as an alternative to incarceration or other punishment options, allowing participants to remain productive within the community.

Instead of waiting until individuals are already in trouble with authorities, these programs can also be used preventively. Schools, churches, etc. are welcomed as program sponsors. Sponsors work with the Center to identify target populations and provide incentives for them to participate. The Center can tailor its programs to meet sponsors' needs.

These programs are available only to those selected by program sponsors for enrollment.

SEP

Shoplifter Education Program classes are offered for first-time juvenile shoplifters and their parents/guardians. In a small group setting offenders discuss their values, choices and actions. They gain perspective on the impact of their actions, now and in the future. This workshop provides an opportunity for communication between youthful offenders and adults who care about them.

Probation sponsors these classes, and invites selected offenders to participate. Merchants who have been victims of shoplifting can participate as well. Please contact the Mediation Center if you would like to share a victim's experience and viewpoint with these groups.
